Can innovation in the food industry still happen without impact? We think not* - the current WWF Discussion Paper has provided a suitable framework for the sustainable transformation of our food system on a global level. Despite the paper's focus on national food strategies, the model can also be used for companies in terms of innovation development.
The study provides guidance for actors involved in innovation. The "Right Innovation, Right Impact, Right Place" framework helps anyone developing or supporting innovation in food systems to build an innovation toolkit to maximize impact and achieve health and environmental goals at the national level - and within planetary boundaries.
The framework helps to select innovations that can best amplify the impact of 20 transformation levers and show promise for transforming food systems. However, innovation alone will not be enough to create a healthy and sustainable food system for all. Innovations are catalysts that can accelerate food system transformation at the national level by helping to close three critical gaps that can hinder action in countries.
Planetary Health Gaps
- (i) The Ambition Gap - when national targets are not ambitious enough to meet global targets and bring food systems within planetary boundaries;
- (ii) The Transformation Gap - when the targeted solutions are not sufficient to achieve the desired changes; and
- (iii) The Implementation Gap - when implementation partners do not have the appropriate resources and guidance to support implementation.
